The Black Girl Social Club started with a Girls’ night. A group of 12 women came together to talk, eat, drink, and close out the year with affirmations right before New Year’s Eve 2019. After a night of healing, guided meditation, laughing, crying, and lots of new connections made, Carmen realized this was something women needed-more specifically Black women. They needed a space to feel seen, be heard, and not feel judged. They needed healing and personal development, through solid relationships and social activities. She wanted to recreate the feeling she felt that day, over and over again. That’s when The Black Girl Social Club was born.
Advancing Women of Color is the brainchild of a very ambitious and solution-oriented woman. Barbara Tyson found herself engaged in emotive conservation on the rising atrocities against people of color in the United States. Among the issues they identified were increased sex crimes, extrajudicial killings, indiscriminate incarceration, human trafficking, and police brutality, with most of them meted out against people of color. Although the cruelty cut across men and women, the latter suffered long-term consequences through disintegrated families caused by missing children, culminating in increased stress levels. As such, they thought of the most feasible method of empowering women by bringing them together and helping champion their interests in one powerful voice, giving birth to the idea of AWOC.
AWOC seeks to identify the common challenges women of color face in the United States and create an avenue where women gather to chat about a common solution to those challenges. It seeks to empower black & brown women by helping them identify and further their inborn potentials that have been suppressed by the unjust nature of society. This will be achieved through training and civic education on women’s issues to instill the spirit of positive activism across all sectors of life.
Is to foster an inclusive international network of Black & Brown women who understand sisterhood, community, and collaboration. Our vision is to create a pool of empowered women who are deliberate in their life choices. We are looking to cultivate relationships and connections that are impactful, while producing work that is equally impactful. We seek to change the narrative about what it looks like when Women of Color come together. We want to be able to do all of these things while maintaining integrity, dignity, and structure within our organization as a whole.
Community. Compassion. Leadership. Service. Integrity.
